It's the Final Countdown

In only 10 short days, my sister will be getting married at the Fordham Church right on campus. (Shameless plug: April 2nd, 4pm - Be there. There may or may not be vuvuzelas) If anyone has gone through the wedding planning process, you know what I've just learned in the past week: wedding crunch time is for real. Oh, you have a 10 page paper due tomorrow at 9:30am that you don't even have a title for yet? Not even close to this pressure. Your final is tonight, but you've been sleeping on Eddie's the entire semester and are yet to open a book? Still not close. What about a 10 page paper and an exam all in the same class that you don't even know the classroom number to? You're getting warmer but still not close to the pressure of finalizing every small detail that goes into hosting a couple hundred people for the night. This includes literally every detail - everything from the complimentary toiletries in the bathroom that you always assumed the reception hall provided, to the after party snacks for everyone getting the munchies around 1am (that you also assumed the hotel provided), to finding the perfect flower girl dress. These are where my blog comes in this week. Here's a snapshot of how I've been learning about the final details to put together a perfect wedding.

Although I did not go dress shopping with my mom and sister (since there's not a chance I'd be of any help), I was around for some of the process, such as my favorite part: the all important Flower Girl Runway Show. On Monday night, the flower girl and her mom came over our house for the fashion show. My sister's flower girl, Kellyann aka "the cutest almost 3 year old ever," confirms the theory that 3 year olds have tons of energy. Imagine the Tasmanian Devil just ate a pound of sugar and washed it down with a Red Bull 6-pack. At times, that was Kellyann running throughout the house and exploring every room. But that made it all the more enjoyable of a night!

One of her favorite games to play was hide-and-seek, only she added her own special twist, making it Hide-and-Seek: Kellyann Style. She'd begin each round as the hider, but before I could start to count, she'd bring me to where she was going to hide, and explain to me, "I'm going to hide here. Now you go count." An interesting way to play, but my sister was the one who used to stand in the middle of the room and simply cover her eyes. Her reasoning, "If I can't see you, then you can't see me, right?" A solid argument for a 3 year old, I'd say. Back to Monday - once I found Kellyann after scouring the entire house, she'd walk away defeated, snap her hands, and proclaim her disappointment with an extremely cute, "Oh, shucks! You found me." Next, it was my turn to hide, but before I could take a step, I was startled by the shouting of, "ONE, TWO, NINE, EIGHT, TEN!" Once I quickly found a spot to hide, I'd hear quiet footsteps creaking slowly through the room, like a lion ready to pounce on its pray. As soon as she'd turn the corner and find me, she'd take a delayed step back and respond, "You scare me!"

Clearly, Kellyann had my stamp of approval, as she did everything with an added touch of cuteness for no extra charge. And even better, after the fashion show and play date, I knew I didn't need to bring a plus one to the wedding. Kellyann is going to be my dancing partner for the night!

Although the other details may seem minor in comparison to Kellyann and the overall wedding, they're somehow a necessity. They're what will hopefully bring the wedding from a, "That was a nice night." to a, "Wow, wasn't that great!" And apparently food is the trick to everyone's heart, shocker eh? But this isn't just buying some bags of chips at Costco and calling it a day. Well, you also probably thought bridesmaids were dainty. Not my sister's. No way. Now how. When it comes to stuffing their face or fitting in their dress, they do the impossible and ask, "why not both?" And they make both work. Next, you need food for the after party. We thought, "Oh, we'll just get a bunch of pizza pies. Everyone loves pizza after drinking." Well, not so fast. Apparently all the pizzerias in the area close before midnight on a Saturday night. Another great idea was to go the classic Jersey route and order in from Tick Tock Diner. Who doesn't love food from a diner? The answer may be no one, but diners hate to deliver. So that option was out as well. After striking out more than once, I was beginning to fully realize the pressure that comes with planning a wedding. As I'm writing this, I actually don't know what the final plans are. I've been running from store to store with my mom for the past few days, and I still don't know. This up in the air attitude perfectly sums up how these plans are going. But with fingers crossed, say a prayer for no rain and everything should turn out just fine!
